The elevator cars can travel in multiple directions and even pass each other within a shaft that could not only reduce wait times, but also fundamentally how buildings are constructed, says Andreas Schierenbeck, CEO of Thyssenkrupp Elevator. (Think horizontal offshoots of straight, vertical towers.) Following a successful test this year, the first MULTI is set to debut in Berlin by 2021.

Its second quarter results published before Christmas showed revenues of $4.4bn (2.9bn), down 4pc. Although its earnings before interest, tax and depreciation were up 9pc in the United States to $291m, in western Europe they were down 5pc to $175m, while in central and eastern Europe they were down 36pc.
